Bauchi State High Court to expand small claims courts to all local government areas
The Bauchi State High Court of Justice is set to establish small claims courts across all twenty local government areas in 2025. These courts will handle liquidated money demands, enhancing access to justice for the state's residents.
Chief Registrar Fatima Abubakar, Esq., announced the expansion, noting the success of the initial small claims courts established in 2022, two in Bauchi and one in Azare. These courts have been well received by the local communities.
“These courts handle claims ranging from one to three million naira, accelerating proceedings and allowing litigants to represent themselves without needing a lawyer,” Abubakar explained. The simplified court procedures ensure that cases are resolved within sixty days, with interpreters available and subsidised filing fees.
In addition to the small claims courts, the high court has also established magisterial districts to facilitate swift justice at the grassroots level.
Presenting the 2024 scorecard, Abubakar highlighted significant achievements, including the appointment of seventeen high court judges and thirty-five magistrates, a notable increase from the previous twelve judges and twenty-six magistrates. The new judges and magistrates have undergone training at the National Judicial Institute in Abuja and locally in Bauchi.
The year also saw the relocation of all courts to their permanent sites. The Bauchi State government has renovated the twin court complex, housing eight high court halls and magistrates' courts 2 and 3, with ongoing work at other courts.
Abubakar commended the state government for providing an enabling environment for the high court to operate effectively.
