Niger police command to enforce third-party insurance policy from February 1
The Niger State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has announced the commencement of enforcement and impoundment of vehicles without third-party insurance documents from February 1st, 2025, across the state.
In a press statement issued by the command's spokesman, SP Wasiu Abiodun, and obtained by Newsline, it was revealed that the enforcement and arrest of owners of such vehicles align with the directive from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to begin the operation nationwide.
To comply with this directive, SP Wasiu urged vehicle owners and motorists in the state to renew their vehicle particulars and acquire the third-party insurance document, allowing them to use public roads from February 1st, 2025. Failure to comply with this directive will result in the impoundment of their vehicles and subsequent prosecution.
The statement advised members of the public to adhere to the provision, while the police command assured vehicle owners and motorists that their personnel would handle the operations professionally during enforcement.
The command also expressed regret for any inconveniences the action might cause while seeking the cooperation of vehicle owners and motorists.
It is noteworthy that the enforcement of the third-party insurance policy, commencing on February 1st, 2025, aligns with Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 3 (1) and (2) of the Motor Vehicle (Third-Party Insurance) Act. These sections mandate all vehicle owners to possess third-party insurance before operating their vehicles on public roads in the country.
