Niger govt partners with federal ministry of youths to boost food security
In a significant move to enhance food security, the Niger State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Ministry of Youths Development. The agreement aims to engage National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members posted to the state in agricultural activities.
The signing ceremony took place at the Government House in Minna, where Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, represented the state. Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim, Minister for Youth Development, signed on behalf of the federal ministry.
Governor Bago emphasized that the MoU aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's vision for food security in Nigeria. He urged young people, who constitute 80 percent of the country's population, to explore opportunities in agriculture for self-reliance.
The partnership will leverage the additional manpower provided by corps members, recognizing the immense potential of the agricultural value chain. The state is committed to its agricultural revolution, exemplified by the construction of Africa's largest greenhouse estate, capable of employing one million people.
Niger State is also establishing 100 farm estates, cultivating 250,000 hectares of land across its 25 local government areas. Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim praised Governor Bago's dedication, particularly his investment in a permanent NYSC camp, ensuring the well-being of corps members in the state.
