Legislator urges Niger govt to rebuild burned Tafa LG secretariat
Hon. Muhammad Sani Idris, the representative of Tafa Constituency at the Niger State House of Assembly, has called on the executive arm of government to intervene in the relocation, rebuilding, and provision of office infrastructure for the Tafa Local Government Secretariat. The secretariat was destroyed during the recent EndBadGovernance protest.
Hon. Idris raised this issue as a matter of urgent public importance during a plenary session of the House. He emphasised that Tafa Local Government, being the gateway to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), hosts a diverse population and requires immediate attention.
He highlighted the extensive damage to the secretariat and stressed the need for state government support to rebuild it. According to Hon. Idris, the miscreants who exploited the EndBadGovernance protest not only destroyed the secretariat but also looted office infrastructure, valuables, and damaged vehicles belonging to individuals.
The legislator further noted the necessity of relocating the secretariat from its current location along the Abuja-Kaduna Express Road to a safer area. He revealed that investigations showed most of those involved in the destruction were not indigenes of Tafa or Niger State.
Hon. Idris confirmed that several arrests have been made, with many of those apprehended coming from neighbouring Kaduna State and other regions. To prevent future occurrences, he mentioned that a more comprehensive stakeholder committee has been established to curb unruly behaviour in the local government.
