Niger NUJ celebrates IBB at 83, hails his visionary leadership
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Niger State Council, Comrade Abu Nmodu, has extended heartfelt congratulations to former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), on the occasion of his 83rd birthday celebration in Minna.
In a statement signed by the Assistant Secretary of the Union, Comrade Abubakar Adamu Kuta, Nmodu lauded the Elder Statesman as a leader, patriot, and a shining example of service to the nation.
He praised IBB's outstanding charisma and visionary leadership, noting that his indelible footprints on Nigeria’s history have significantly contributed to the unity and development of the country.
"In the past, broadcasting was an exclusive government business, meaning private individuals did not have the right under law to invest in the sector. Notably, the liberalisation of the media industry by IBB broke the monopoly of the media sector, opening it to competitiveness and abundant access to information," Nmodu stated.
He also highlighted General Babangida's role, alongside his ministers of the Federal Capital Territory, the late Mamman Vatsa, Hamza Abdullahi, and later General Gado Nasko, in relocating the seat of government from Lagos to Abuja on December 12, 1991.
"His dedication to our great nation is unwavering, and we honour his selfless service, which has been a beacon of hope for our country," Nmodu added.
The award-winning council chairman acknowledged the influential position of the former Nigerian leader, who, even after 31 years out of power, has consistently remained a voice of wisdom and counsel for many political leaders, both within and outside Nigeria.
Nmodu emphasised that the octogenarian's impact on the nation’s growth and development is immeasurable, and his legacy will continue to inspire new generations of leaders.
He concluded by praying for the continuous well-being of General Babangida and his family.
