Police refute bandit threats to MI Wushishi Estate Minna
The Niger State Police Command has refuted claims of bandit threats to residents of MI Wushishi Estate in Minna, as reported by some national dailies and circulated on social media.
In a statement, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Wasiu Abiodun, categorically denied the reports, labelling them as entirely false.
SP Abiodun clarified that on September 2, 2024, at approximately 2:00 PM, a distress call was received regarding an incident involving artisans and illegal miners attempting to enter MI Wushishi Housing Estate to conduct illegal mining activities. The residents resisted, leading to a confrontation that resulted in damage to houses and vehicles and the death of one of the miscreants.
A police patrol team, led by the DPO of Maitumbi Division, was dispatched to the scene, where they dispersed the miscreants and restored order. The police have since maintained a presence in the area to prevent further incidents and ensure calm.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Shawulu Ebenezer Danmamman, urged the public to disregard the false reports of bandit threats. He also called on journalists to verify their information before publication to avoid unnecessary panic and tension that could negatively impact tourism and business in the state.
CP Danmamman emphasised the importance of responsible journalism in maintaining national security and public confidence.
