Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has commissioned fibreglass boats provided by the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) as part of the 2024 World Maritime Day celebration.
Speaking at the event held at the N-HYPPADEC headquarters in Minna yesterday, the governor, represented by his deputy, Comrade Yakubu Garba, highlighted the commission’s commitment to the safety and prosperity of riverine communities. He emphasised that the initiative not only saves lives but also fosters a sense of belonging among these communities, marking a significant investment in both infrastructure and security.
The governor commended N-HYPPADEC for the project, acknowledging the daily challenges faced by riverine communities. He noted that by enhancing maritime safety, N-HYPPADEC is actively protecting lives, easing transportation, and ensuring that waterways remain vital sources of livelihood.
"As we commission these fibreglass boats, we also commission a pathway to improved community development. These boats are more than just vessels; they are symbols of progress, resilience, and hope for a brighter future," he remarked.
Governor Bago reiterated Niger State's commitment to partnering with N-HYPPADEC and other stakeholders to promote holistic development in riverine areas. He also stressed the importance of safeguarding marine life for a balanced ecosystem, urging stakeholders to prioritise the safety and protection of waterways for sustainable use.
Earlier, N-HYPPADEC Managing Director, Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, noted that since 2021, the commission has been dedicated to improving the lives and livelihoods of people in N-HYPPADEC states. He acknowledged the contributions of these states and highlighted the dangers of wooden boats, which are prone to damage and accidents.
Yelwa explained that the procurement of fibreglass boats aims to modernise boat operations and reduce accidents on waterways, as these boats are safer and more durable. He urged boat operators to adhere to safety rules and maintain the fibreglass boats, assuring that the commission will continue working to ensure safe waterways.
The Managing Director also appreciated the efforts of the Niger State governor in developing the state, describing them as commendable.
In his welcome address, N-HYPPADEC Director of Operations, Iliyasu Abdullahi, represented by the Head of Dams Operations, Zubairu Adams Utono, stated that the initiative aims to enhance connectivity and livelihoods across N-HYPPADEC states.
A total of 33 fibreglass boats were distributed, with Niger State receiving eight, Kebbi State six, Kogi and Kwara States four each, Benue State three, Nassarawa State two, and Kaduna, Gombe, and Taraba States one each.
