In a thrilling opening match of the 2024 Niger State Governor’s Cup Football Competition, the Chanchaga Local Government football team held the hosts, the Lapai Local Government team, to a 2-2 draw.
The match, played at the Late Mohammadu Kobo Secondary School in Lapai on Thursday, saw both teams showcase impressive football skills. Despite their efforts, the first half ended goalless.
Lapai took the lead in the 49th minute when Isah Kasim converted a penalty. Nine minutes later, Umar Farouq doubled the lead with a header, giving the hosts a comfortable 2-0 advantage.
However, Chanchaga’s resilience shone through. Substitute Kalifa Mohammed scored a header in the 63rd minute, reducing the deficit. Israel James then equalised in the 75th minute, finishing a pass from Mohammed.
Despite both teams’ efforts to find a winner, the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
Dr. Nuhu Garba Ngaski, representing Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, assured that the state would continue to engage youths through sports. He highlighted the recent inauguration of 32 sporting associations as part of efforts to revitalise the sports sector.
Commending the Niger State Football Association (NSFA) and its leadership, the governor urged participants to uphold sportsmanship and play by the rules. He reiterated the government’s commitment to youth and sports development.
Alhaji Abubakar Aliyu Mila, representing the commissioner of the ministry of local government and chieftaincy affairs, assured continued sponsorship of the annual competition. He praised the state FA for organising the tournament and encouraged participants to strengthen bonds of friendship.
Dignitaries at the opening ceremony included Hon. Mohammed Kiriko, Hon. Aminu Yakubu Ladan, and Engr. Ibrahim Dada Maikunkele, among others.
