A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Niger State and Lagos under the Produce-For-Lagos initiative, where agricultural produce in Niger State will feed the bourgeoning population of Lagos.
The MoU, which was signed by both heads of their respective governments, will provide farmers in Niger State with a ready market to offtake their agricultural produce to meet the food demand of Lagos people at a stabilised price.
Agricultural produce under the agreement includes paddy rice, tubers, legumes, and grains.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago signed on behalf of the Niger State Government, while Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu signed for the Lagos State Government.
A statement by Governor Bago's Chief Press Secretary, Mal. Bologi Ibrahim, said this move further demonstrates the determination of Governor Umaru Bago to ensure that the food security policy of his administration and that of the federal government are realised.
"The governor reiterated that Niger State has all it takes to feed the nation and even export to other nations; hence, he is not relenting in attaining the goal, noting that the state is ready to partner with more states on beneficial collaborations," the statement added.

Niger State Government, in partnership with a diversified agriculture value chain group, Origin Group, has taken delivery of agricultural equipment to scale up agricultural production and promote national policy on food security.
Origin Group, with its programme called Total Agricultural Support Programme (TASP) in partnership with Campo Company of Brazil, is engaging in a specialised agro-support programme with the Niger State Government.
The equipment received included 500 large-capacity tractors, 500 harvesters of varying capacities, and 1000 different agricultural and irrigation equipment and farm implements.
The programme, which was aimed at supporting 50,000 hectares of fully irrigated food production hubs in Niger State, will help the state scale up its desire to deepen food production, wealth creation, and employment opportunities for the teeming population of the state.
The landmark initiative, when fully implemented, will eradicate drudgery, including 50 percent post-harvest and revenue losses by farmers.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mal. Bologi Ibrahim, said in a statement that the Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago-led administration remains committed to the agricultural revolution, and his desire to make Niger State an agricultural hub of Nigeria is unwavering.
